Introducing the Z80

Introduced in July 1976,
the Z80 was already a latecomer to a crowded field.
It faced fierce competition from loyal user bases
but benefitted from a more mature chip fabrication process.

Ease of integration was the key selling point.
That was accomplished in many ways:
  1. 8008, 8080 compatible instruction set
  2. compatibility modes in hardware
  3. winning people to the Zilog way
